Mathilda's Three Month Update

By Mathilda Martinsson,

Time flies – I need it to slow down!

I can’t believe my internship is ending this week - my 14 weeks will be finished. It blows my mind how fast those weeks have gone by - quite scary! I’m genuinely having such a great time here in Exeter and at Aquamarine Media. It’s not just the job, which is perfect for me, but the environment, the people -  just the whole package. Attending events, awards and expos isn’t too shabby either!

Learning Pay-Per-Click

As a marketing intern, I’ve done A LOT, there is a lot of variety and that is right up my alley. I spent my first couple of weeks on the Pay-Per-Click side where I was taught the basics; What is PPC? How do you do search queries? Add negative words? Since all of you probably already read Vicky’s blog post last week “a beginner’s guide to PPC” you know what these things are now, right?

What I found very stimulating with PPC is the different aspects of the job, we have the more basic stuff; adding negatives, checking search queries and then we have the more in-depth analytic part of it; is the account using the budget in the most efficient way, can I optimise it? Is there anything wrong with landing pages that affects the traffic? Bounce rates?

There are so many things to analyse and optimise and I have a lot to learn – which I look forward to, I want to be a PPC wiz! I’ve also realized that numbers can actually be fun and nothing like the maths lessons I had in school!

Getting to Grips with Social Media

After a few weeks of dipping my toes into the PPC water, it was time for me to try the social media side. The first task I was given was managing our Twitter account, I must admit that it made me nervous! I had never done anything with social media before, and to be perfectly honest, I didn’t even have an active Twitter account before I started here! (But don’t tell anyone that)

After seeing different parts of social media, I realized that this aspect of the job was just as fun; researching, writing catchy ad copy for different content. Apart from managing our Twitter account I started producing Facebook ads, LinkedIn ads and writing copy for different infographics - both for Aquamarine and our clients.

Bringing the Two Together

When a few more weeks had passed, I started to incorporate more PPC again. At this point, I was given my own clients on both the PPC -side and two clients on the Social side, including ourselves. By now I’m managing our Twitter each day and I have my clients that I build campaigns for, analyse and keep an eye on every day to make sure everything is performing as well as possible; change bids, check budgets, update keywords etc.

Time to Celebrate

In May I was given the responsibility to plan our third-year anniversary party. This meant that I oversaw the invite, cake, venue etc. I’ve always loved to be the person who organises, plans and gets stuff done, so to be given this task was really a fun addition to everything else, and again something different, which is always fun.

If you’re coming to the party you’ll see how it turned out and if you can’t make it then keep an eye on our Twitter and Instagram feeds for updates! I’m very excited about it, even though I’m unfortunately not attending it since my graduation is the day after and I must fly back to Sweden.

That should hopefully give you an idea of what I’ve been up to these past four months. As I’ve mentioned before, I love the variety of the tasks, I never found it’s boring to head into work, I look forward to it and for me, that is one of the most important factors when it comes to your choice of workplace.

To finish things off, I have some exciting news to share! I’m staying until August. Alona asked me if I wanted to stay and it was an easy decision for me. How could I turn it down? A great experience, fantastic people, stimulating work tasks, and to top it off beautiful Exeter, and all the amazing people I’ve met here! I simply wasn’t’ ready to move back to Sweden yet.
